Expected Learning Outcomes

Aims of the course are to provide students with knowledge on the impact of Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAI) at national, European and global level, on the concepts and tools for the HAI epidemiological surveillance according to the standards of European and/or national projects; to prepare the students for evaluating results of surveillance studies and of the main strategies for the prevention and control of HCAIs.

Course Structure

The course includes lectures in which continuous interaction with students is encouraged and specific examples to apply the knowledge acquired during the course.

Should teaching be carried out in mixed mode or remotely, it may be necessary to introduce changes with respect to previous statements, in line with the programme planned and outlined in the syllabus.

Detailed Course Content

Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAI): definitions, epidemiology, prevention and control. The European surveillance of HAI: definitions, activities, strategies and principles. Diseases-specific ECDC network. The epidemiological study of HAI: repeated prevalence and incidence studies, laboratory-based surveillance. The surveillance of Surgical Site Infections. The surveillance of HAI in Intensive Care Units: European and Italian projects. Compliance with guidelines for antimicrobial prophylaxis. Patient safety and clinical risk management. The Clean Care is Safer Care project of the WHO.

Written and oral exams

The highest grade will be assigned to the student who has demonstrated mastery of the topics, ability to applyknowledge, communication skills and mastery of the disciplinary vocabulary.

Verification of learning can also be carried out by an online platform, if needed
