SCIENZE MEDICO-CHIRURGICHE E FARMACOLOGICHEModule General Surgery
Academic Year 2025/2026 - Teacher: GUIDO NICOLA ZANGHI'Expected Learning Outcomes
The General Surgery module provides students with the basic knowledge necessary to understand the main diseases of surgical interest, the most common surgical techniques, and the role of laboratory medicine in supporting the diagnostic and therapeutic pathway of the surgical patient.
Expected learning outcomes (Dublin Descriptors)
1. Knowledge and understanding
At the end of the module, students will have acquired basic knowledge of the principles of general surgery and of the main surgical techniques applied to the most frequently encountered clinical conditions. Students will also understand the role of laboratory medicine in supporting surgical decision-making, pre-operative assessment, intra- and post-operative monitoring, and the management of complications.
2. Applying knowledge and understanding
Students will be able to apply the acquired knowledge to understand the diagnostic and therapeutic pathway of the surgical patient, recognizing the contribution of laboratory tests in surgical planning, surgical risk assessment, and post-operative follow-up. They will also be able to contextualize laboratory data in relation to the main surgical techniques.
3. Making judgements
Students will have developed critical skills in the interpretation of laboratory data related to surgical activity, assessing their reliability and clinical relevance for decision-making purposes. They will be able to understand the significance of laboratory results within different clinical and surgical contexts, contributing to the appropriate integration of diagnostics and surgical practice.
4. Communication skills
Students will be able to clearly and appropriately communicate information and laboratory results relevant to surgical activity, using adequate technical and scientific terminology and interacting effectively with the different professional roles within the surgical team.
5. Learning skills
Students will have developed autonomous learning skills that will enable them to continuously update their knowledge in both surgical and laboratory fields, with particular attention to the evolution of surgical techniques and the increasingly integrated role of laboratory medicine in supporting clinical and surgical decision-making.
