Expected Learning Outcomes

The course aims to provide students the theoretical basis of linguistics, tools and methods of human phonetic analysis and description of the relevant sounds of a language (phonology), in particular of standard Italian and varieties.

Course Structure

Lectures, active learning. 

Workshop about phonetic transcription. 

Required Prerequisites

Learn to read and understand complex texts on different subjects; knowing and enhancing the Italian language awareness and accuracy in terms of spelling and morphology, complex syntax, precision and richness of the vocabulary, even specialized.

Detailed Course Content

Natural languages and human language. Segmental articulatory phonetics: the vowel and the consonants. Italian phonetics: standard, regional pronunciation and neostandard, dialects. Suprasegmental articulatory phonetics.  Phonology. The phonetic spelling (IPA).

Learning Assessment

Learning Assessment Procedures

The exam consists of an oral exam. 
Elements to be evaluated: relevance of the answers, quality of their contents, ability to connect with other topics within the program, ability to report examples, quality of technical language, and overall expressive ability.
