LANGUAGE SCIENCES I
Module APPLIED MEDICAL TECHNICAL SCIENCES

Academic Year 2026/2027 - Teacher: GIUSEPPE LANZA

Expected Learning Outcomes

According to the Five Dublin Descriptors

1. Knowledge and Understanding - The student should demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • the main anatomical and physiological structures involved in language and phonation;
  • the physiological mechanisms underlying language and voice across the lifespan;
  • the typical development of reading, writing, metaphonological skills, and narrative abilities.

2. Applying Knowledge and Understanding - The student should be able to:

  • apply anatomical and physiological knowledge to the understanding of communication processes;
  • recognize the characteristics of typical communication development;
  • understand the developmental stages of reading and writing as a foundation for subsequent clinical reasoning in speech and language therapy.

3. Making Judgements - The student should demonstrate the ability to:

  • distinguish between typical development and potentially atypical conditions in the main areas of communication;
  • integrate knowledge from different disciplines, particularly anatomy and physiology;
  • develop an initial critical approach to the observation of communication processes across the lifespan.

4. Communication Skills - The student should be able to:

  • use technical and scientific terminology appropriate to the field of speech and language therapy;
  • present the theoretical content of the course clearly, accurately, and coherently;
  • effectively communicate complex concepts related to language and voice development.

5. Learning Skills - The student should demonstrate the ability to:

  • independently acquire, process, and consolidate the course content;
  • develop critical study skills that support further academic and professional training;
  • update their knowledge through the recommended textbooks and the learning materials provided.

    Learning Assessment

    Learning Assessment Procedures

    Oral examination. Assessment criteria: relevance of the answers to the questions asked, quality of content, ability to make connections with other topics covered in the course syllabus, ability to provide appropriate examples, correct use of technical terminology, and the student’s overall communication and presentation skills.

    To ensure equal opportunities and in compliance with current legislation, students may request a meeting to discuss and arrange any appropriate compensatory and/or dispensatory measures, taking into account the learning objectives and their specific needs. In such cases, students are advised to contact the Department’s CInAP representative (Centre for Active and Participatory Integration – Services for Students with Disabilities and/or Specific Learning Disorders) for the relevant Degree Programme.

    Examples of frequently asked questions and / or exercises

  • What are the brain areas involved in language, and what are their main functions?
  • What is metaphonological awareness?
  • How many stages are involved in the typical development of reading and writing skills, and what are they?
