Expected Learning Outcomes

To acquire knowledge on the main diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system and to correlate them with speech therapy

To understand the mechanisms, and the related possibilities of adaptation, of the main neurological diseases of interest for speech therapy

To know how to apply theoretical knowledge and evaluation techniques to the diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of the main speech therapy conditions

Frontal interactive lessons, supported by slides, videos, and tutorials

Required Prerequisites

Knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the central and peripheral nervous system, and in particular of the phono-articulatory and swallowing system

Knowledge of the general diagnostic and management approach to the speech therapy patient

Attendance of Lessons

Mandatory, unless otherwise specified

Overview of the general organization of the nervous system and principles of neurorehabilitation

Patient's approach and neurological examination for the speech therapist

Clinical and rehabilitation of the main neurological diseases for the speech therapist: acute cerebrovascular diseases (stroke, cerebral hemorrhages); cognitive impairment and dementia; Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders; multiple sclerosis; amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and other motor neuron diseases;  traumatic brain injury; cerebellar ataxia
