Expected Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcomes based on the Dublin Descriptors

The Scientific English course is designed to ensure that students achieve the following learning outcomes, aligned with European academic standards:

D1. Knowledge and Understanding

Students will acquire a solid grasp of English grammatical and syntactical structures, with a primary focus on specialized technical and medical terminology. They will demonstrate the ability to understand core concepts within international scientific literature and the terminological nuances required to interpret complex texts and clinical protocols.

D2. Applying Knowledge and Understanding

Students will be able to utilize their linguistic tools to:

  • Consult and critically analyze global scientific databases and peer-reviewed literature.

  • Produce scientific documentation (abstracts, manuscripts, reports) according to international academic standards.

  • Operate effectively in professional environments abroad, facilitating pre- and post-graduate mobility for research or clinical practice.

D3. Making Judgements

Through the analysis of case studies and scientific publications, students will develop the ability to:

  • Evaluate the reliability and relevance of scientific information published in English.

  • Identify and select the most appropriate linguistic register, distinguishing between the formal rigor of academic research and the clarity required in clinical practice.

D4. Communication Skills

Students will develop versatile communication competencies to:

  • Interact effectively with patients, translating technical jargon into accessible, empathetic language (patient-centered communication).

  • Actively participate in professional discussions and information exchanges within international scientific contexts (conferences, seminars, meetings).

  • Present technical data with terminological precision to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.

D5. Learning Skills

The course aims to provide an autonomous study methodology that enables students to:

  • Constantly update their linguistic skills in line with the ongoing evolution of global scientific language.

  • Pursue advanced education (Master’s, PhDs) in international settings with full command of the English language as a medium of instruction.

A2 level

Detailed Course Content

Integration of the four basic skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing) and use of the language in different situations on topics of general and scientific nature with an appropriate register and with argumentative and personal reworking skills. Ability to decode a scientific text.
