Expected Learning Outcomes

The student must acquire the ability to:

  • Describe the principles, aims, and scope of Occupational Medicine and workplace prevention.

  • Understand the main legislation (Legislative Decree 81/08 and subsequent amendments) and the structure of both company-level and national prevention systems.

  • Understand the pathophysiological and clinical mechanisms of the main occupational and work-related diseases, including:

    • conditions caused by exposure to physical and biological agents,

    • musculoskeletal disorders,

    • work-related stress and psychosocial risks.

  • Know the principles of risk assessment and health surveillance, including fitness-for-work evaluation and medical protocols.

  • Understand the interaction between occupational factors, lifestyle, and individual health conditions.


Course Structure

Lectures will be delivered as classroom-based theoretical sessions conducted by the instructor. The lessons will follow a structure designed to facilitate the progressive understanding of the topics and their integration with practical applications. Specifically, the teaching activities include:

  • Systematic presentation of content using multimedia materials (slides, charts, diagrams).

  • Explanation of key concepts in Occupational Medicine, legislation, occupational risks, and health surveillance.

  • Guided discussion of clinical examples and real cases to support the application of theoretical concepts.

  • Student interaction through questions, discussion moments, and short oral exercises.

  • Illustration and analysis of technical documents, such as the Risk Assessment Document (DVR), medical protocols, and guidelines, aimed at developing practical skills relevant to future professional practice.

The lectures are organized to promote active participation, integration of theory and practice, and the development of clinical–preventive reasoning.

Attendance of Lessons

Attendance at the lectures is strongly recommended in order to support the progressive acquisition of the course content and to encourage active participation in discussions and in-class exercises.

Learning Assessment Procedures

Assessed objectives: basic theoretical knowledge, legislation, pathophysiology, and occupational risks.

  • Multiple-choice questions (MCQs) on:

    • principles of Occupational Medicine,

    • Legislative Decree 81/08 and the roles and responsibilities within the prevention system,

    • physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic, and psychosocial risks,

    • health surveillance and fitness-for-work evaluation,

    • major occupational diseases.

  • Short-answer questions on pathophysiological mechanisms or applied aspects.

Passing criteria: achievement of the minimum threshold (e.g., 60–70% correct answers).
