Expected Learning Outcomes

With reference to the so-called Dublin Descriptors, the learning objectives are:


Knowledge and understanding: students will develop comprehension skills at a level that enables easy interaction within their field of study; they will acquire knowledge and understanding from a linguistic perspective in accordance with the parameters of ALTE and the Council of Europe, as well as sector-specific English language relevant to the Degree Course in Speech and Language Therapy.

 

Applying knowledge and understanding through the acquisition of language skills, students will be able to apply their knowledge and understanding in a way that demonstrates a professional approach in a work context, and will possess appropriate competencies to support patients, including in intercultural work settings within the field of Speech and Language Therapy.

 

Making judgements: based on the knowledge acquired through lectures and practical exercises, students will develop the ability to gather and interpret data (normally within their field of study) considered useful for forming independent judgements.

 

Communication skills: through lectures and face-to-face verbal and non-verbal communication, students will critically reflect on their current and potential communication skills, integrating them with those included among the educational objectives of the Degree Course in Speech and Language Therapy, and developing advanced skills that demonstrate mastery and innovation necessary to solve problems in specialized work or study contexts.

 

Learning skills: with reference to the topics covered in class, research guidelines will be provided so that students will be able to manage complex technical/professional activities or projects, taking responsibility for decision-making in work or study contexts.

 

Expected learning outcomes: English language proficiency at B2/C1 level and the ability to address specific and specialized topics related to Speech and Language Therapy produced in L2 at B2/C1 level.

Course Structure

The oral part of the course will assess students’ communicative competence and their ability to interact during teaching activities (interactions, spontaneous or prompted contributions).


Consideration will also be given to the results of ongoing assessments (written tests with multiple-choice questions, reading and comprehension skills, summarizing skills and comprehension of scientific articles), as well as commitment, participation, operational skills, contributions, progress compared to initial levels, etc.

Required Prerequisites

Language skills required for level A2+/B1 of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

During the course, the following topics will be covered:


- Basic English grammar;

- Main language functions;

- Language functions related to healthcare and assistance topics;

- Specific vocabulary of the medical and healthcare environment;


The vocal tract and the mechanism of phonation

Speech disorders and language disorders

General introduction to articulation disorders

Speech-language therapy techniques and methods

Apraxia

Aphasia

Stroke and post-stroke rehabilitation

Analysis of a case study structure as well as a scientific article

Analysis of publications


Language functions and grammar structures:


- Revision of basic sentence structure

- Revision of tenses

- Specific speech pathologist terminology

- Reported speech

- Passive voice

- Discussion of cohesive devices in the English language

- Phrasal verbs

* Asking for / giving advice and suggestions

* Reporting past events and actions

* Speaking based on reading
