Expected Learning Outcomes

Acquisition of basic knowledge of microbiology; understanding of the pathogenetic mechanisms of germs; diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and prophylaxis of infections; evaluation of the transmission pathways of infections with particular reference to the nosocomial ones; choice and evaluation of the most appropriate pathological samples in the field of microbiology: collection  and maintenance of the sample for diagnostic use; infections affecting various body districts.

Detailed Course Content

Principles of microbiology: structure, reproduction, pathogenesis and pathology of the main infectious agents; sampling systems for a correct diagnosis; direct and indirect diagnosis of infections; evaluation of the transmission routes of infection with particular reference to the nosocomial ones; infections affecting various body districts including the choice of the most appropriate pathological sample: infections of the central nervous system (CNS), of the upper and of the lower respiratory tracts, ophthalmic infections, otolaryngology infections, gastrointestinal tract, genitourinary system, sexually transmitted diseases (STD), infections of the skin, infections in pregnancy.
