Expected Learning Outcomes

The course aims to provide students:

1) the theoretical basis for a "scientific study" of languages and language, through reflection on the characteristics and properties of all historical-natural languages, linguistic variation and the main sociolinguistic and dialectological themes;

2) the theoretical basis of text linguistics, through reflection on the speaker's textual competence;

3) reflection tools for the analysis of the Italian of medicine (from morphological, syntactic, textual and pragmatic points of view) and indications of the main characteristics of the textual types of medical communication (scientific article, university lecture, report, medical record, etc.), with reference to the theme of simplification of medical communication.

Course Structure

Lectures and active learning, with the support of multimedia presentations.

Workshop about textual competence. 

Required Prerequisites

Learn to read and understand complex texts on different subjects; knowing and enhancing the Italian language awareness and accuracy in terms of spelling and morphology, complex syntax, precision and richness of the vocabulary, even specialized.

Detailed Course Content

  • Natural and human language and natural-historical languages. Sociolinguistics and dialectology. Varieties of Italian: specialized languages and medical language.
  • The text. Textual references. The distribution of information in the text. Sentence, proposition and utterance.
  • The Italian of medicine:  morphological, syntactic and textual peculiarities. 
  • Towards professional writing: textual types of specialized medical communication (scientific article, medical record, report, etc.).

Learning Assessment

Learning Assessment Procedures

The exam consists of an oral test. For the evaluation of the exam, the mastery of contents, the skills acquired and the argumentative ability demonstrated will be taken into account.

Possible in-course tests or laboratory exercises on textual analysis will be agreed upon and, if necessary, the students' writing of a textual analysis paper (as agreed upon in class).
